How to add page numbers to a PDF

Make a report, handout, or document easier to navigate by adding a visible label to every page. pdPDF creates a new numbered copy in your browser; your original file stays where it is.

Open the Page Numbers tool

Steps

  1. Open Page Numbers and choose a PDF file from your device.
  2. Pick Bottom Center, Bottom Right, or Top Right. Check that the chosen corner has enough empty space around the original content.
  3. Choose a format: “Page 1 of 3,” “Page 1,” or “1.” Set the starting number and font size if needed. A three-page document starting at 5 ends at 7, so the first “of total” label reads “Page 5 of 7.”
  4. Click “Add Page Numbers.” Open the downloaded file, whose name starts with numbered_, and check the first, middle, and last pages.

What the tool can and cannot change

The tool numbers every page in the selected PDF. You can choose one of three positions, a starting number, one of three label formats, and a font size from 8 to 24. It does not currently skip a cover page, use Roman numerals, set different formats by section, or automatically reserve margin space. If the original page content reaches the chosen corner, the new number may overlap it.

Need a cover without a number? Extract or separate the cover first, number the remaining pages, then merge the files back in the intended order. Check the result before sharing.

Privacy and document checks

The numbering code reads and writes the PDF in browser memory. It does not upload document content to a pdPDF conversion server, although the website still loads normal assets over the internet. Because the numbered PDF is a changed copy, inspect form fields, links, and any digital signatures in a PDF reader before relying on them.

Common questions

Can I start at page 10?

Yes. Set “Start at” to 10. This changes the displayed number on the first page; it does not skip the first nine pages.

Can I number only selected pages?

Not directly. The current tool applies a label to every page in its input PDF. Extract selected pages first if you need a separate numbered subset.

Will the original PDF be overwritten?

No. The tool downloads a new file and leaves the source document untouched.
